Step 1: The Initial Class Join us on a Friday or Saturday for your first 8 hours of training. This covers the "Power to Arrest" and "Appropriate Use of Force." Please bring a valid Government ID and a laptop or iPad so we can help you submit your application in person.
Step 2: The BSIS Application Using your personal device, we will guide you through the official BSIS online application. Doing this during class ensures your paperwork is filed correctly to avoid any processing delays.
Step 3: The Live Scan After submitting your application, you must complete a "Live Scan" (background check) through the DOJ and FBI. This is a standard requirement to ensure all our guards meet state safety levels.
Step 4: The 32-Hour Training Once your initial license is issued, you are cleared to work. However, you must complete an additional 32 hours of specialized security training within your first six months of employment to remain compliant.
Step 5: Annual Continuing Education To keep your license active every year, you are required to finish 8 hours of refresher training. At Mendoza Private Security, we make sure you stay up-to-date and fully certified for the long haul.
How much does the Guard Card cost? The training we provide at Mendoza Private Security is free for potential employees. However, there are state-mandated fees you must pay to the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). This includes a $55 application fee and approximately $75 to $90 for your Live Scan (background check) fingerprints, depending on the location you choose.
How long does it take to get licensed? Once you complete your initial class with us and submit your online application, the BSIS typically processes and approves the license in 2 to 4 weeks. If your background is clear, you can often see your name on the "License Search" website and start working even before your physical card arrives in the mail.
Do I need a high school diploma or a drug test? The State of California does not require a high school diploma or GED to obtain a Guard Card. While the state does not require a drug test for the license itself, many of our specific job sites and clients may require a clean drug screen as a condition of placement.
What if I already have some training? California requires a total of 40 hours of training. If you have already completed the initial 8 hours but still need the remaining 32 hours of continuing education, you can still book a session with us. We will help you audit your records and ensure you are fully compliant with the 30-day and 6-month state deadlines.
Can I carry a firearm after this class? This specific class is for a standard Guard Card only. Carrying a firearm requires a separate, specialized Firearms Permit and additional range qualification. We recommend mastering the standard Guard Card process first, and we can discuss your path to becoming an Armed Guard once you are part of the Mendoza team.
