If you're looking to start a career in private security, the first step is getting your California Guard Card. The process has changed over the years, and in 2025, there are some new rules you should know about. This guide breaks it all down so you can get licensed and start working as quickly as possible.
✅ Step 1: Complete the 8-Hour Guard Card Training (Now In Person)
California law now requires in-person training for your initial 8-hour course. This training is split into two separate modules:
5 hours on Appropriate Use of Force
3 hours on Power to Arrest
This training must be completed with a BSIS-authorized security trainer.
At Mendoza Private Security, we offer this required training.📞 Contact us for pricing and to reserve your spot in an upcoming class.
✅ Step 2: Apply Online Through the BSIS Breeze System
Once you complete your 8-hour training, you’ll receive a certificate. Next, you’ll apply for your Guard Card online:
Create a Breeze account
Submit an application for Security Guard Registration
Upload your training certificate
Pay the application fee (around $55, subject to change)
Be sure to double-check that all info is correct before submitting.
✅ Step 3: Get a Live Scan Background Check
After you submit your Guard Card application, you’ll need to complete a Live Scan fingerprinting to run your background check through DOJ and FBI databases.
Download the Security Guard Live Scan Form (from the BSIS site)
Visit a local Live Scan provider (fees usually range from $60 to $80)
⚠️ Important: Your Guard Card won’t be processed until BSIS receives your Live Scan results.
✅ Step 4: Wait for Approval from BSIS
BSIS will review your application and background check. Processing time can vary, but most applicants receive their Guard Card within 2 to 4 weeks.
You’ll get an email notification when it’s approved
You can work with the temporary card while waiting for the physical one
✅ Step 5: Complete 32 Additional Hours of BSIS Training
Once you're officially registered, BSIS requires 32 more hours of security guard training:
16 hours within 30 days of receiving your Guard Card
Another 16 hours within 6 months
Mendoza Private Security offers these courses too—reach out to complete your ongoing training and stay compliant.
